Oxidation of 4-chloro-3-methylphenol in pressurized hot water/supercritical water with potassium persulfate as oxidant
Article Abstract:
A continuous flow system is used to measure the ability of potassium persulfate to oxidize 4-chloro-3-methylphenol. Graphs show the conversion of 4-chloro-3-methylphenol in relation to temperature, and the rates of resulting corrosion and sulfate effluent production.

Analytical characterization of contaminated soils from former manufactured gas plants
Article Abstract:
Soil from five former manufacturing gas plants, and two coal tar plants were examined to determine levels of organic matter (OM). The goal of this study was to find information about the longevity and evolution of in-situ polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the soil. OMs were extracted using pyrolysis/oxidation with flame ionization/thermal conductivity detection. The extracted material was then fractionated by liquid chromatography into saturated hydrocarbons, PAH and resins. Saturated hydrocarbons were also run through a mass spectrometer. OM levels were found to be similar with a total of 28 percent organic carbon in the solvent. Coal tar samples produced a higher level of extractable OM and PAH.
