Panel suggests fewer NSF centers
Article Abstract:
A special task force recommended that the NSF's four supercomputing centers be pared down to two or three, chosen by national competition, which will then work more closely with state and regional supercomputing organizations. The report suggests the current mission could be supported more efficiently.

Panel backs S&T Centers programs

Representatives from the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine report that the 24 Science and Technology Centers begun in 1989 have produced world-class research and should be permitted to recompete for National Science Foundation funding.
