Particulate organic carbon solubilization in an acid-phase upflow anaerobic sludge blanket system
Article Abstract:
A bench-scale, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket continuous flow reactor was used to examine the impact of operational and environmental parameters on particulate organic carbon solubilization during the acid-phase digestion of primary municipal sludge. Changes in hydraulic retention time from 6 to 15 h. affected both particulate organic matter solubilization and product formation. Specific total organic carbon solubilization rate and percent volatile suspended solids reduction were slightly affected by variation in solids retention time (SRT) from 5 to 20 days. On the other hand, volatile fatty acid production logged a sharp decline at the shortest SRT investigated.

Source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to Lake Michigan determined from sedimentary records
Article Abstract:
The concentration levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in sediment cores obtained from Lake Michigan are studied as part of a fossil fuel research. Multiple linear regression is applied to a model representing the sediment cores to establish their respective PAH sources. Results indicate that coal has been a significant source of PAH with a a share of 10 to 80 percent of the total PAH value.
