A tale of comets - in cells
Article Abstract:
Julie A. Theriot worked as a research fellow at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. With the use of video cameras, she found that two food-borne bacteria, Shigella and Listeria, divide several times upon entering a host cell. They then form 'comet tails' which they use to move to adjacent cells, thus spreading the infection. Theriot is now with the Stanford University doing research on how to stop the formation of comet tails, thus preventing them from moving to other cells.

High-tech help for dirty diesels
Article Abstract:
University of Southern California researchers have developed a device that converts diesel engine exhaust fumes to air, carbon dioxide and water vapor. The device, which will enable diesel engines to meet strict emissions standards, is an exhaust after-treatment system based on a pulsed-power electronic circuit. Its chamber design fits into diesel-exhaust systems where it can react to particulate hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide.
