Spinning a good yarn: the identification of core competencies at Courtaulds
Article Abstract:
The process of identifying and confirming the core competencies of a large, fiber technology firm is examined. Results show that this process tends to be problematic, mainly because core competencies are not as formalized as the technologies that are linked to them. In the case of the fiber specialist profiled, Courtaulds PLC, the core competency identified was the development of chemical procedures needed to commercialize synthetic fibers developed elsewhere. This hypothesis was proven to be correct after an examination of Courtaulds' experience in the development of the new cellulosic fiber.

Towards re-use of knowledge in the concept stage of development
Article Abstract:
A framework for determining the intended objective of a product development initiative is presented. This framework, which was devised for use in the conceptualization stage, aids the establishment and re-use of acquired knowledge. Its use within the product development program of Colorproofing Systems is discussed, as are its applications in several other companies. The experience of these manufacturing companies shows that the use of such concepts as the product knowledge map can improve the understanding of product functions while enhancing an organization's learning abilities.

Product design and social needs: the case of North-East Brazil
Article Abstract:
Small companies that manufacture light engineering products in Paraiba, Brazil, usually lack capital resources and work by contracts despite the existence of enterprise support firms. Product design is carried out by non-professional designers, usually with no technical know-how, or the businessmen themselves due to financial constraints. Because of this lack in technical information, there is a need for intervention from the government especially to the small firms to improve their ability to compete in a wider market.
