Repairing severed spinal cords
Article Abstract:
Macrophages are immune cells that attack dead and dying cells as well as invading microorganisms in wound sites. Though their healing functions are not usually recruited in the human central nervous system, researchers believe that ongoing studies on macrophages will soon lead to new treatments for spinal cord injuries. These studies focus on developing ways to activate macrophages to respond to brain and spinal cord injuries.

Killing the last cancer cell
Article Abstract:
Scientists are studying how the immune system attacks invading microorganisms to find a way to destroy tumor cells that remain in the body after cancer treatment. Resistant strains often cause relapse and may even develop more virulent versions of the cancer. Some scientists report that certain immune cells can be used to shrink or destroy lingering tumors when injected in large concentrations.
