Photodechlorination mechanism of DDT in a UV/surfactant system
Article Abstract:
This paper discusses a means for removing organic chemicals (DDT) from contaminated soil. The soil was placed in an aqueous state and then subjected to surfactants and monochromatic ultraviolet light at 253.7 nm. The extent of degradation was then examined. Three non-ionic micellar solutions were each tested. As part of the study, a practical model, in the form of mathematical equations for predicting photochemical degradation of DDT was also developed. The study found that photooxidation of the surfactant was minimal.
