Physicists create new state of matter
Article Abstract:
The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), a long-sought state in which a gas is cooled to a point where its atoms all share one quantum state, was achieved by a team at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. They won a race with other labs by combining evaporative and laser cooling techniques.

Physicists explore the driplines
Article Abstract:
The 1993 Conference on Radioactive Nuclear Beams focused on research on nuclei that are on the edge of stability. Advances in accelerator and detector technology have allowed physicists to study more than 3,000 exotic nuclei.
