Portland's light rail goes underground
Article Abstract:
The extension of the first light-rail system in Portland includes a twin-tunnel section and the deepest transit station in North America. The project provides low-floor cars for access to passengers in wheelchairs. The Washington Park Station offers passenger services to the city zoo, the World Forestry Center and the Vietnam Memorial. The division of the running tunnels into three sections is due to the diverse geological conditions and environmental impacts. The specially designed tunnel boring machine for mining the entire length of the tunnel gives initial ground support elements.

Geotextile helps tailor old rail bed for new use
Article Abstract:
Engineers at Baltimore's new light rail system opted to upgrade the existing railroad track to facilitate construction, reduce costs and minimize labor. This method also minimized freight traffic disruption by allowing one track to operate continuously. The engineers used geotextile material to cover the underlying track bed and proceeded to build the new railroad over it. The geotextile helps retain the fine gravel and ash into the old bed during heavy rain and prevents them from weakening the new structure.

L.A. Metro Rail Red Line motoring toward start-up
Article Abstract:
The construction of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Red Line continues with phase one nearing completion and phase two still ongoing. The system's train cars will be tested in Pueblo, CO's test tracks while Miami loaned some cars to be test run on Red Line's tracks. The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission plans to develop the lake and park area after phase two is finished. Phase three of the project will begin by 1994.
