Power plays
Article Abstract:
Impending European regulations on exhaust emission control have stimulated research in powertrains particularly on the minimization of emissions during the critical warm-up period of an engine and during any transient operation. Sophisticated engine management systems (EMS) are often needed and control strategies are needed based on models of the air and fuel flow processes in the engine running in real time within the EMS. Another technique is the usage of an afterburner to remedy the cold-start problem.

Quiet passage
Article Abstract:
Improving of comfort levels in automobiles by reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) is an important part of design with repercussions in competitiveness. Audible noise and uncomfortable high frequency vibrations can both be eliminated by the same design changes because they are close to one another in the frequency spectrum. Untreated commercial vehicles which have to comply with noise legislation can be remedied by using soft-mount systems.

High suspense
Article Abstract:
Rover Group Ltd. has developed a new suspension system for its newest 400 Series. The system was designed such that suspension damper valve and a fluid-controlled engine mounting system performed independently of the car's body suspension. Another development is Clevite Elastomer's fluid-damped and control-torque suspension bushes, where elastomeric sealant variation is allowed for better torsional handling.
