Privatization takes its toll
Article Abstract:
California Department of Transportation (Caltran)'s privatization of toll projects has sparked debates regarding the move's practicability. Proponents state that the private sector can augment project financing and the move conformed to legislation encouragingpublic/private partnerships. Moreover, state and federal environmental laws anddesign and construction oversight will govern the projects. Opponents aver thatthe projects will only enrich its investors and pose environmental hazards. They also accuse Caltrans of illegal contracting, avoiding its responsibilitiesand misrepresenting funding issues.

Pioneer highway
Article Abstract:
The Glenwood Canyon Highway in Colarado is 12.5 mi long, and connects Baltimore and Cove Fort, Utah. The project took 12 years to complete, and received the Outstanding Civil Engineering Award for 1993. The highway contains 39 bridges and viaducts and is a landmark in constructional technology.
