Products of chromate reduction on proposed subsurface remediation material
Article Abstract:
The outermost edges of iron filings used in the subsurface remediation of dissolved chromate developed geothite and chromium coatings. The iron filings were mixed with quartz and immersed in solutions that contained about 20 mg/L dissolved Cr(VI). The use of iron filings and quartz grains in chromate reduction is important in determining the fate of reduced chromium for the proposed use of permeable-reactive redox walls. Subsequent analysis of the iron filings' surface indicate that Cr(VI) can be completely reduced to Cr(III).

Article Abstract:
The suggestion that the rapid formation of a chromate-phenol ester is the first step in the oxidation of phenols by chromate is supported by the UV/visible difference spectra showing absorbance bands in the 350-450 nm region. The inconsistencies in the absorbance bands is due to the different spectrophotometers used. Diode array spectrometers are not as sensitive as scanning spectrophotometers in producing an accurate spectral identification of chromate-phenol esters.
