R&D cooperation by Swedish contractors
Article Abstract:
A survey on cooperative research among construction firms in Sweden is analyzed. The survey measured the amount and nature of research done in 1989 by contractors with a minimum of 50 workers. The firms surveyed were grouped into medium-sized firms with 50 to 500 workers and large-sized firms with more than 500 workers. Interviews were then conducted with managers for research of the surveyed firms. Results of the survey showed that the main reason for undertaking cooperative research was to increase a firm's marketing capability. Seven other secondary reasons were given and ranked according to significance for doing research.

Federal budget impasse affects EPA operations, contractors
Article Abstract:
EPA officials state that the impasse over the federal budget has severely affected the agency's ability to operate. Congress has passed a continuing resolution to allow the continued operation of federal agencies but this has left the EPA with a budget which is 25%, or $1.7 billion less than that of the previous year. Officials are warning that the EPA may be forced to layoff employees and cancel contracts if the current level opf funding continues indefinitely.

The contractor-subcontractor relationship: the subcontractor's view
Article Abstract:
Jimmie Hinze and Andrew Tracey's study on the contractor-subcontractor relationship in the construction industry yielded valuable insights. However, the general characterization of the contractor-subcontractor relationship is not reflective of the actual process, particularly with regard to bid shopping. The researchers failed to realize that subcontractors are as cost-conscious as contractors.
