Recasting a dirty industry
Article Abstract:
The Casting Emission Reduction Program was established by a partnership of the private sector and government agencies to help the foundry industry comply with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The private sector participants include the Environmental Research Consortium of the US Council for Automotive Research and the American Foundrymen's Society. The government partners include the EPA, the California Air Resources Board and the US Air Force Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center at McClellan Air Force Base. The program will receive federal funding of $40 million over five years to invent a foundry with near-zero emissions.

Bioremediation of uranium contamination with enzymatic uranium reduction
Article Abstract:
The potential of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans for uranium removal is evaluated. Experiments involved the utilization of enzymatic uranium reduction under standard anaerobic techniques. A directly coupled plasma spectrometer was used to determine metal concentrations in the mine drainage waters and the groundwaters as ion chromatography determined nitrate and sulfate. The utility of the method was demonstrated.

Engineering enzymes for better bioremediation
Article Abstract:
Environmental engineers are exploring the catalytic mechanism of enzymes to increase the success rates of bioremediation projects. The process involves identification of the enzyme and its desired characteristics, identification of enzymatic activity and the search for the appropriate organism that expresses the enzyme to achieve successful biotransformation.
