Reclamation project enjoys spoils of Boston's big dig
Article Abstract:
Contaminated spoil will be utilized in a brownfields reclamation project in Boston, MA. The land reclamation project, which is pegged to cost $65 million, aims to change three landfills into a recreation facility. The project will incorporate a golf course, athletic fields and hiking trails. The use of contaminated spoil will allow the state to save more than $30 million. The state will pay $5 per ton to eliminate between five to 7 million cu yd of glacial till, clay and granite.

Maglev demonstration project proposed for Virginia Beach

A consortium of firms is working closely with local, state and federal officials in Virginia to secure funding and permits for a proposed $28.8-million, two-mile magnetically levitated train demonstration project in Virginia Beach, VA. The project could be running as early as Oct 1999 if the necessary financing is obtained and could be the stepping stone for a larger, high-speed rail project that would link the Virginia Beach area with Richmond and Washington, DC.

Lagging funds delay Las Vegas flood control project
Article Abstract:
Engineers are complaining about the lack of financial sources to fund the flood control project for Las Vegas, NV. The system, which is designed to protect the city from flash floods, would not be finished until 2007. Work on the channels focused on a segment that parallels the beltway system construction. It will be characterized by a storm-water collection system of primary channels, detention basins and debris basins.
