Reductive elimination of chlorinated ethylenes by zero-valent metals
Article Abstract:
Halogenated ethylenes undergo reductive beta-elimination to alkynes under environmental conditions. To test this hypothesis, zero-valent metals such as iron and zinc were used to degrade contaminants such as dichloroethylenes and chlorinated ethylenes, respectively, under controlled conditions. The results confirmed previous findings that reductive beta-elimination pathways are involved in the reaction of chloroethylenes with zero-valent metals.

Reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene catalyzed by vitamin B12 in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems
Article Abstract:
An approach for the treatment of wastewaters containing trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was evaluated. TCE and PCE were treated using homogeneous and heterogeneous vitamin b12 systems in a batch experiment using titanium(III) citrate as reductant. Carbon mass recovery from TCE and PCE reduction was approximately 89% and 81-84%, respectively, relative to the control for both systems. Overall, reduction of PCE occurred much more rapidly than reduction of TCE. The degradation of TCE was faster in the heterogeneous system than in the homogeneous system. The reactions were suggested to have taken place ia sequential hydrogenolysis.
