The US Department of Energy built 300 energy-efficient houses in northwest Chicago, IL. The houses feature unvented attics, double air-barrier systems and advanced framing systems that reduce energy needed for heating and lighting.

Radon-blocking house
Article Abstract:
Mike Nuess of Spokane, WA designed and lives in a house built to be both energy-efficient and free of radon. This was accomplished by dividing the house into two air-tight sections. Construction details are discussed.

Edward Peden has made a home out of a former Atlas-E missile silo near Dover, KS, which he bought for $40,000 in 1983. Peden has formed a company, called Twentieth Century Castles, to sell former missile sites.
