Report backs science, not new station

A National Science and Technology Council report praised the accomplishments of the National Science Foundation research in Antarctica but did not wholeheartedly endorse construction of a new research facility. The report recommends finding savings in current funding to finance the station.

U.S. Antarctic panel makes case for replacement station
Article Abstract:
A panel commissioned by the National Science Foundation recommended replacing its aging South Pole research station with a new station that will fit in the NSF's overall budget. An $180-million plan proposed in 1994 was scaled down to $120 million, making it more likely to be approved.

Pressure on budget triggers review of Antarctic program
Article Abstract:
Congress has ordered a review of the National Science Foundation research effort in Antarctica. The review will affect ongoing research in the region as well as plans to build a replacement for the Amundsen-Scott Station.
