Review threatens royal observatories
Article Abstract:
The British government decided in Apr 1996 that the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) and the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh (ROE) will have to compete with other public and private organizations for their work. The institutions had managed most of Britain's ground-based telescopes.

Unique protein database imperiled
Article Abstract:
SWISS-PROT, a database of some 18 million amino acid sequences of proteins available on the Internet, is seeking emergency funding to keep it from being sold to a private firm. The database is used by researchers around the world, and logs 400,000 connections a month.

Mutant alga blurs classic picture of photosynthesis
Article Abstract:
Research on a mutant alga suggests that the long-standing view that both photosystems I and II are necessary for photosynthesis may be incorrect. Mutants of Chlamydomonas without photosystem I can grow photoautrophically in an aerobic atmosphere.
