Risk assessment draft gives WTI incinerator clean slate
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive risk assessment of the hazardous waste incinerator of Waste Technologies Industries in East Liverpool, OH, cleared it of any damaging human health risk. The EPA assessment said the facility's human health risk is within an acceptable range, with noncancer risk acceptable and cancer risk less than one in one million for a resident living nearby and consuming local food and drinking water. The assessment, which cost over $1 million, was sparked by community protests due to the incinerator's emissions and its location near residences, a drinking water source and an elementary school.

Hazardous waste incinerator rule delayed by EPA for more than a year
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will not give a final ruling on hazardous waste incinerators until March 1998 or later. The regulations, which should have been finalized on December 16, 1996, would have penalized facilities that annually burn approximately 3 million tons of hazardous wastes. The facilities, which endanger the health of an estimated 53 million people living near them, either have adequate and state of the art incinerators or none at all.
