Rubber dam holds water
Article Abstract:
The Alameda County Water District shows the viability of rubber as an alternative material for the construction of dams. This dam is actually an inflated balloon attached to a concrete foundation on Alameda Creek. Initial construction costs exceeded that of concrete dams but this is offset b the elimination of problems such as corrosion and costly maintenance. Its inflatability facilitates easy removal and replacement afterwards. It also provides the district means to replenish its water supply all year round. The dam also features monitoring devices for water level and air pressure.
