Russian national parks: transition or turmoil?
Article Abstract:
Russia's extensive number of well-kept national parks and national reserve systems are receiving seriously inadequate funding following the collapse of Communism. In 1997, national parks receive around five percent of the budget allocated in 1990. Much of the funding has originated from local government bodies rather than central government. Research programmes, park resource management strategies and employee training programmes are all suffering due to inadequate finance.

Views from America's parks
Article Abstract:
The country's national parks face numerous threats from within and beyond their borders. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, for instance, struggles with insufficient funding, insect infestation and air pollution. The Rocky Mountain National Park faces problems resulting from population growth along its borders while the government's efforts to preserve the Grand Canyon are motivated by economic gain rather than a true desire to protect its resources.

Poland's national parks: problems and prospects
Article Abstract:
Poland's national parks have long been considered a national treasure even though their natural beauty and unique ecosystems have been damaged considerably for decades. The country's economic transformation from Communism in 1989 has further exacerbated the problem. The Polish government needs to focus on a management strategy which involves the compilation of an inventory and protection programme for every park habitat.
