Safety curtain
Article Abstract:
The European Commission along with Belarus and Ukraine, after assessing the feasibility of new radiological early warning systems, recommended a safety network to minimize dnager from nuclear power plant accidents. The warning network 'Gamma-Curtain' will enable radiological detection at nuclear power plants and population centers, and provide early warning about accidents at EU countries. The Gamma-1 Pilot project, implemented in Ukraine and Belarus, provides monitoring systems for high density gamma-dose rates. Mobile response vehicles track radiation plumes and do background monitoring.

Solution claimed for Ro-Ro ferry safety
Article Abstract:
A group of engineers at the University of Glasgow have developed a new design for roll-on/roll-off ferries which includes a perforated deck; controlled downflooding; and a double-skinned, partitioned hull which provides the stability. Internal partitioning is not necessary and the hull could only be impaired by hull-length fissuring, so the ship can retain the full-length. This design could have prevented the disaster of the Herald of Free Enterprise and Estonia. However, this design requires new construction because older ferries cannot be retrofitted.

Safety net
Article Abstract:
Morton Automotive Safety Products has been using computer models to simulate air bag deployment and save time and money otherwise spent on actual physical tests. The company uses the program called PAM-CRASH from Engineering Systems International which interactively folds the bag, reducing the time needed to conduct one analysis iteration to two hours. Another essential feature of the program is a set of algorithms for detecting and studying contact between various parts of one structure or between two colliding structures.
