Fermat's last stand

Andrew J. Wiles of Princeton University has supported Pierre de Fermat's famous and most notorious theorem in 1994, following a decade of rigorous efforts. Wiles needed to work on and further study various modern ideas in mathematics and had to prove, particularly the Shimura-Taniyama conjecture.

Natives of Langda village in New Guinea had practiced ax making in isolation until economic changes transformed their culture in 1984. An examination of the prehistoric technique of ax making is described.
