Salk: under new management

The renowned Salk Institute chose Pollard, of Johns Hopkins Univ School of Medicine, to be its new president, after a two-year search. While not famous, Pollard is a distinguished cell biologist with administrative experience and the willingness to raise funds for the chronically underendowed institute.

IL-12 deaths: explanation and a puzzle
Article Abstract:
Researchers believe that kidney cancer patients given IL-12 got sick or died because they received the drug in multiple, high doses before being given a single, lower dose. Patients who had been given a single, lower dose a few weeks before the high, multiple doses did not suffer adverse reactions.

Getting all turned around over the origins of life on Earth

Scientists attending a meeting on 'The Origin and Homochirality in Life' tended to agree that the fact that DNA and RNA twist to the right and amino acids veer left is essential to all life. They disagreed about whether or not homochirality proceeded life.
