Sampling and analysis artifacts caused by elevated indoor air polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations
Article Abstract:
The indoor air concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) were measured for three buildings in Bloomington, IN, from the period between 1987 to 1995. Indoor PCB levels were five to 300 times greater than outdoor PCB levels. The concentrations increased with the age of the buildings. Air PCB concentrations were higher at the roof of buildings with roof-top ventilation than those without roof-top ventilation, and were five times greater than ambient concentrations. These results, however, appeared to have been contaminated by the elevated indoor air PCB levels prior to PCB sampling and analysis.

Article Abstract:
David J. Shanefield's assumptions on the possible natural sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD/F) and dibenzofurans are not supported by experimental evidence. Analysis of wood thermal combustion indicated the production of only 3% of the total global PCDD/F from forest and brush fires. Furthermore, the amount of PCDD/F that is released from the thermal combustion of wood and biomass is not a significant factor in the sedimentation of these pollutants in the ecosystem.

Diurnal variations in atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls and endosulfan
Article Abstract:
Significant diurnal variations were detected in atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls and endosulfan in Bloomington, IN. Air samples collected in the morning had twice the concentration of both these semivolatile organic compounds (SOC) as compared to those collected at midnight. The results indicate that daily SOC concentration measurements should be undertaken in multiples of 24 hours.
