Scientific Cross-Claims Fly In Continuing Beef War
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) and the US are locked in a trade war over hormone-treated beef. The European Commission released a report claiming that there are health concerns about hormones in beef, but some scientists are challenging the results. The EU has also found hormone residue in US beef that allegedly was hormone free.

Hungary: industry and foundations help out
Article Abstract:
Hungarian universities are soliciting help from industry to finance educational reforms. Science departments want to develop programs that will prepare graduates for jobs in industry. The Central European University has begun a program in environmental science.

State Department lifeline to be cut
Article Abstract:
State Dept officials have confirmed that funding for a program of cooperative research with East European scientists will be cut. The action will hurt Hungary and Poland the most. In 1995, they received $1.25 million and $900,000, respectively.
