Seeing single photons: a superconducting way to spot photons one by one
Article Abstract:
The limitations of the charge-coupled devices (CCDs) used in the digital cameras, camcorders and document scanners are presented. The features and advantages of the new CCDs based on superconducting technology, developed by Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology, which can detect individual photons and identify their wavelength, are discussed.

Fluorescent nanaparticles of semiconducting material are known as quantum dots, and the colour of light they emit depends on the size of the dot. A new process of making dots from Dowtherm A and Therminol 66 has slashed the costs drastically.
