Research involving stem cells from the adult body was uncontroversial and unrestricted. Scientists believe that embryonic stem (ES) cells would provide more powerful treatments but that the greatest obstacle to assessing and harnessing the potential of ES cells was a lack of freedom and funding to the work.

A neuroscientist, Jonas Frisen of the Medical Nobel Institute in Stockholm was working towards regenerating brain tissue. Jonas found that some or all of the brain tissue never regenerates naturally and he began dating the age of the cells based atomic-age carbon 14 in DNA.
