Seeking Lasting Truths Among the Stars
Article Abstract:
Observations of the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) reveal that there is more water vapor in clouds that form into stars than previously thought. The SWAS found one water molecule for every million hydrogen molecules, or ten times as much water as predicted. This prevalence of water in these pre-star cloud formations could change the landscape of research on what planets are made of and how clouds collapse into stars.

Telescope Builders Think Big--Really Big
Article Abstract:
Astronomers at a two-day workshop in southern Sweden presented ideas on building a giant telescope and offered different versions of the next step in designing it. Proposals included using a 50-meter monolithic mirror as well as using segmented mirrors to produce a 100-meter version.

The First Step to Heaven
Article Abstract:
Scientists have a method of measuring the galaxies but can not agree on the point where they start measuring. This is important because cosmic distances are essential to figuring out the age and expansion rate of the universe. Astronomers discuss the issue.
