Indoor air pollution is considered one of the top four environmental threats in the US. A typical house can contain enough chemicals to compare with Los Angeles, CA, on a smoggy day. Thirty percent of buildings and homes have indoor pollution serious enough to effect the health.

Self-healing concrete
Article Abstract:
Professors Carolyn Dry and Victor Li have developed a form of concrete that can repair itself. The 'smart' concrete will probably need fewer repairs and maintenance than conventional concrete, and it could improve the safety of buildings and other structures in which it is used.

Removing CFCs from old appliances

Many appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases that damage the ozone layer. Beginning in Jul 1992, all CFCs must be recovered from household appliances that are being disposed of or recycled.
