Researchers believe a correlation exists between gum disease and the risk of heart disease, as oral bacteria has shown up in arterial plaque, and levels of the C-reactive protein are elevated in people who have periodontitis. Some researchers dispute the findings, saying other factors for heart disease should be given more weight.
