Little big science: high-energy polemics erupt over plans to replace an aging French synchrotron
Article Abstract:
French education minister Claude Allegre's plan to collaborate with Britain to build a synchrotron called Diamond rather the the all-French Soleil synchroton has provoked controversy. Scientist at the Laboratoire pour l'Utilisation du Rayonnement Electromagnetique protested by voting against turning on their synchrotron.

A simple mimic: water droplets encased in fat simulate cell membranes
Article Abstract:
An attempt to engineer a simple model of the cell's plasma membrane, particularly, the ion channels in the membrane, is presented. The model involves membrane mimicry that uses water droplets enveloped in a layer of fat to form a membrane into which membrane channels are fixed.
