Settling down easy
Article Abstract:
Currently under construction above a floating foundation on a sinking island is the New Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan. Essential for the successful operation of this airport are careful evaluation and control of the settlement. The maintainance of an extensive field observation network, critical review of collected data and measures for accommodating differential settlements are required in this endeavour. Sand drains, sand compaction piles and deep cement mixing were used to improve the reclaimed soil used. Other specifications were set-up for the standard maitainance of the airport.

Infrastructure construction in Thailand has increased significantly due to rapid economic development between 1981 and 1991. The proposed Baiyoke II Tower Hotel will be the first high-strength steel and concrete building in Thailand. The Bangkok Wastewater Project - Yannawa will treat wastewater and help in protecting the environment. Four expressways, a multi-modal transport project, and two rail mass-transit systems have been proposed to improve road traffic. The Second Bangkok International Airport will have a high-way access to Bangkok and will also be connected by high-speed rails.

Burrowing beneath Bangkok
Article Abstract:
Thailand is currently constructing its first ever underground subway system. The city's Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority's Blue Line subway system involves 22 kilometers of twin tunnels that are 5.7 meters in diameter and provide the backbone of an even larger metropolitan transportation network. It is located in Bangkok's central area and is split into northern and southern sections. The underground stations and station approach tunnels are expected to be built using cut and cover methods with diaphragm walls and internal supports.
