Researchers at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, have developed a smoke and fire sensor that beats existing devices in terms of ability to distinguish between false alarms and genuine fires. Infrared technology is used for the device.

The nose knows

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has developed the nose-on-a-chip which can detect natural gas leaks and carbon monoxide. The chip can also be programmed to contact the fire department when leaks are found.
