Simultaneous complexation of organic compounds and heavy metals by a modified cyclodextrin
Article Abstract:
Cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide that increases the aqueous solubilities of several low-polarity organic compounds and enhances the transport and removal of those compounds from the soil. New studies show that cyclodextrin also has the capability to complex low-polarity organic compounds by modifying its structure under relevant environmental conditions. The hypothesis suggests that this complexation could be used to remediate sites contaminated by mixed wastes.

Cyclodextrin-enhanced in situ flushing of multiple-component immiscible organic liquid contamination at the field scale: mass removal effectiveness
Article Abstract:
The viability of 'enhanced-solubility' remediation technologies in eliminating nonaqueous-phase organic liquids (NAPLs) was assessed at the field scale level. Technologies using cyclodextrin (sugar) solution were found to be highly effective in flushing NAPLs. The usage of such solution has resulted in a rise in target contaminants' aqueous concentrations, which range from 100 to more than 20000 times greater than the concentrations produced by the water flush.

Cyclopentanol-enhanced solubilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by cyclodextrins
Article Abstract:
The solubilization of six pyrene/alcohol systems (PAHs) by beta-cyclodextrin (CD) and gamma-CD on a cyclopentanol base is examined. Cyclopentanol was used due to its size compatibility and interaction with beta-CD. Various PAHs were tested to evaluate the relationship between PAH structure and ternary complexes. Improved solubilization of PAHs by gamma-CD through cyclopentanol application indicated no structural selectivity influence.
