Sister bridge to resist maximum credible earthquake
Article Abstract:
The adjoining bridge to the Benicia-Martinez Bridge near San Francisco, CA, is being built without seismic isolators but would rely on steel hinges, ligthweight-concrete and deep foundations to withstand the effects of a 1,000-year-return earthquake. It has been designed so that damages that it will sustain from a major earthquake would be minor and repairable. The bridge will have three main cast-in-place, segmental concrete box girder spans that will carry northbound traffic. The California Dept of Transportation expects to complete the bridge by the summer of 2003.

A bridge for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
A fixed link across the Great Belt East Bridge has been approved by the Danish Parliament. The $5.8 billion fixed link includes three major projects that allow a bored rail tunnel to connect the tiny island of Sprogo to Halsskov on the major island of Zealand. The other projects allow West Bridge to extend from Sprogo to Knudshoved on the east coast of Funen and the construction of East Bridge, a 6.8 km bridge that will connect Sprogo and Halsskov. The projects utilize cable spinning technology, a method which the US plans to apply in long-span bridges construction.

A grand new bridge
Article Abstract:
The new cable-stayed Seohae Grand Bridge, in Seoul, South Korea, is 15 miles (9.4 km) long with center span measuring 470 meter. Pistonlike lock-up devices that facilitate movement responses to temperature fluctuations, creep, and shrinkage are incorporated into the bridge construction. It is also resistant to aerodynamic motions and earthquakes.
