Sky-high ambition
Article Abstract:
Ariane 5, the next generation space launch system developed by European Space Agency (ESA), is to be tested in Oct 1995 and assumes a launch success rate of 98.5%. The aim has been to reduce launching risks after the failures of Ariane 4. In the present design the main cryogenic stage can be ignited and tested before actual launch. Other designing innovations of the system are discussed. Apart from Portugal and the UK, all other ESA countries have invested in Ariane 5.
