Casting about
Article Abstract:
British Steel recruits around 200 new graduates a year, but its manager of management development and selection, David John, says that high quality recruits are difficult to find. Because the class of degree held by individuals is an unreliable indicator of their effectiveness in business, British Steel targets its graduate recruitment efforts on faculties which have produced good results in the past. The company places less reliance on the university milk round, instead focusing on its contacts with academic staff.

Degrees of freedom
Article Abstract:
Figures from a Higher Education Statistics Agency Survey in the Uk show that 73% of graduate engineers are in full-time work, compared to 62% of all graduates. Studies also show that engineering graduates earn higher salaries than many other graduates, have greater job security and are more likely to be employed in professional occupation. However, the salaries of engineering academics are not keeping pace with others, with teaching engineers being the most poorly rewarded.

Power to the people
Article Abstract:
PowerGen's senior recruitment adviser Annette Capper says, despite a general shortage of engineers in the UK, the company is successfully recruiting them into the energy industry. PowerGen recruits graduates all year round rather than relying on the university 'milk round'. Its recruitment campaign includes career fairs and advertising on university campuses, and it is now displaying an online application form on its website.
