Slope instability caused by small variations in hydraulic conductivity
Article Abstract:
A study on slope instability due to small variations in hydraulic conductivity is evaluated. Questions are raised over the study's accuracy because of the boundary conditions used. It is argued that the author should have extended the boundary conditions beyond the limits off the slope to reduce their effects on groundwater flow. The author should have also controlled ground water rather than suggest the use of conservative groundwater flow assumptions.

Erosion and stability of a mine soil
Article Abstract:
A technical paper on erosion and stability of a mine soil provides valuable data to geotechnical engineers. The information is particularly helpful in erosion problems in southern California's soft sandstone slopes. Raindrop impact and transportation of particles by flowing water are the two key processes of erosion. The degree of cementation of the individual particles should be considered when analyzing erosion in soft sandstone slopes.

State of the art: limit equilibrium and finite-element analysis of slopes
Article Abstract:
The finite element and limit equilibrium methods were employed for slope stability analysis. Three soil specimens were subjected to a conventional range of laboratory testing for shear strength identification. An extrapolated value of effective cohesion was derived through the confining pressure testing of compacted clays. Curved and very low or zero cohesion were observed in the failure envelope in the low effective stress range.
