Slow rebuilding of Germany's east
Article Abstract:
Rebuilding of the research infrastructure in former East Germany has been slow and laden with budget constraints, but the pace has been increasing. Many research institutes were dissolved and many scientists lost their jobs. Reorganization along western lines began after reunification.

Rio signatories to negotiate new goals

Representatives from 150 countries attending the Apr 1995 Berlin conference on the climate agreed that the 1992 agreement they ratified in Rio de Janeiro would not be sufficient to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions in the next century.

Polish universities remain hampered by the tradition of authoritarianism that prevailed during the communist era. Science departments lack sufficient funding to keep current. Inflexible curricula are an additional problem.
