Researchers are urging the National Institutes of Health to make available a public database of single nucleotide polymorphisms. The academic community is concerned that proposals for commercial patents will limit access to this important tool in the study of multigene diseases.

Gallo's institute at the last hurdle
Article Abstract:
The Maryland legislature is expected to give final approval in March 1996 to $20 million in funding for Gallo's Institute of Human Virology. Several states had competed for the center. Sponsors expects return on investments in therapeutics for AIDS and other viral diseases.

NIH plans peer-review overhaul
Article Abstract:
NIH Dir Harold Grant's May 5, 1997 announcement that proposals will be rated on innovation was the first step of a major overhaul to the peer-review system that determines who will receive more than $5 billion worth of grants each year.
