Saving soil and water in Africa's arid zone
Article Abstract:
The Sudano-Sahelian zone's cultivated area receives the least amount of rain annually and contains some of the least fertile land in Africa. Soil- and water-conservation techniques must be implemented in this area to ensure household food security and to alleviate poverty, as majority of the population depends on rain-fed agriculture for survival. Farmers of the Sudano-Sahelian zone have developed various native soil- and water-conservation methods, such as the construction of small water-conserving holes at plants' bases.

Indonesia's upland soil sprouts seeds of change
Article Abstract:
Indonesia has achieved a rapid growth in agricultural output and a reduction of poverty levels through the installment of irrigation systems in the country's lowland areas. However, the country failed to consider the rain-fed upland agricultural region, where the poverty level still lingers at high levels among small landholders. To improve the country's upland soil, the Indonesian government has invested in upland projects designed to prevent soil erosion and reduce poverty.
