Stars stop a silent volcano

Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, is a long quiet volcano, atop which astronomers are using the world's largest collection of telescopes to better understand the origin and evolution of the universe. Thirteen telescopes of various kinds aid research among which, Keck I and II are the best-known telescopes.

The killing lakes
Article Abstract:
In 1980 two lakes in Cameroon released carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere, resulting in the deaths of 1,700 people. A description of the attempts to degas the lake before it releases more gas are presented.
