The science community is poised to benefit from the additional funds made available by a healthy US economy. The 1998 budget contains an R&D allocation that doubles the figure requested by the White House. Fierce competition over funds is expected to ensue.

Jack Gibbons warned federal agency officials during a press briefing that federal science spending through 2002 will not keep up with inflation. He reported that the Clinton administration is planning meetings on the future of research and development.
