Article Abstract:
The Dearne Valley Partnership was formed in 1992 to promote economic development in the Dearne Valley in South Yorkshire. Once the centre of the region's coal mining industry, the area has suffered badly from its demise. The partnership has had to cleanse old coal mining sites to make them suitable for redevelopment, as well as retrain workers who had no experience of industries other than coal. With aid from a 7.5 million pounds sterling government grant, the partnership has created 4,200 jobs, with the largest employers being call centres. Among the relocators in the area are German automotive supplier Kostal.
