Strain measurement in the wavy-ply region of an externally pressurized cross-ply composite ring
Article Abstract:
Moire interferometry can be used to determine ply-level strains and orthogonal displacement components in the wavy areas of hydrostatically loaded graphite-epoxy rings. Large interlaminar shear strains, absent in the perfect ring, are observed near the wave inflection points. The wavy plies produce large interlaminar normal compressive strains along a radial line which coincides with maximum wave amplitude. Nonlinear strain response starts appearing at approximately 60% of the failure pressure.

A method for the analysis of the growth of short fatigue cracks
Article Abstract:
A new method for analyzing the growth of short fatigue cracks introduces three modifications in line focus acoustic microscopy. The modified technique considers the ratio of plastic zone size to crack length, accounts for the generation of crack closure, and uses a material constant to link the cracked and the smooth specimen behavior. The method is effective when grain boundaries influence crack generation. Application of the technique to a 1045 plain carbon steel is discussed.
