Stretching a landfill
Article Abstract:
Engineers from Waste Management Services of Pennsylvania Inc, rust Environment and Infrastructure and OHM Remediation Services utilized a number of construction techniques to expand a landfill located in Tullytown, PA. They designed new disposal cells for two disposal areas to overcome potential problems associated with the removal of dredge material. They also developed a scheme to replace a pumped leachate system with a dual-containment gravity leachate system running below a double-lined disposal area.

Value engineering at a superfund site
Article Abstract:
The first extensive application of value engineering (VE) to a Superfund site that helped lower the cost of remediating Mantua, N.J.'s Helen Kramer Landfill is discussed. After a remedial design was selected by the EPA, the design team identified five high cost items, all related to ground water withdrawal and treatment, that had good potential for VE. The evaluation was completed with the development of seven interrelated VE studies and their corresponding recommendations.
