Structural innovation and management strategy in the iron and steel industries of Japan and Germany
Article Abstract:
Japan and Germany have successfully employed varying management strategies to further develop their iron and steel industries despite poor economic conditions. Germany focused on technological development while Japan concentrated on innovation strategies. The Japanese iron and steel industry has progressed following World War II to such a high level that Japan became recognized as a world power. With the magnitude of this influence, management strategies must ensure smooth international trade relations.

Factors affecting the development of information systems in Japan: pioneering experience in the steel industry
Article Abstract:
The Japanese steel industry was one of the more important engines of economic growth which facilitated the rehabilitation of Japan following World War II. Licensed technologies from the US and Europe were transferred to Japan during the 1950s and 1960s. To stimulate the growth of the industry, new management methods were practiced and emerging information system technologies were applied. The evolution of the Japanese steel industry with respect to its application of information systems is presented.

Current challenges facing the Japanese steel industry
Article Abstract:
Economic conditions in Japan and the rest of the world largely determine demand for Japanese iron and steel. Other factors which affect demand are the changing mix of end-products and competitiveness of steel producers. An overview of technological and product development within the Japanese steel industry is presented along with trends in the 1970s and 1980s. The Japanese steel industry should evolve into general materials production to be able to meet growing local and international demand.
