The World Health Organization is launching a campaign against malaria in the disease's stronghold, the sub-Saharan area of Africa. The disease has long been a scourge of humankind, and the many attempts to control it are discussed.

Two scientists who live north of the Equator contemplate the physical and climactic changes as they travel to South Africa. Gravity makes directions subjective, but the location of the sun relative to the Earth causes shifts in seasons and climate as one travels from north to south.
